Question for all you portable music widget owners!

I want an iPod. Well, not necessarily an iPod, because it's the most expensive option out there. But I want a thingie I can use for playing music when I walk. I want a flash-drive option, and I want one that is easy to use. I don't want a 'shuffle' option - I want something where I can at least choose the song I am going to hear. And I want one that works, that won't break, and that will withstand some rough treatment (which is just a general precaution one takes with a 2 year old). Please, people, debate amongst yourselves, call each other a ninny with no brain, and all that other fun stuff - but most importantly, PLEASE help me figure out what my parents are giving me for my birthday last week! :)

I can give you opinions on both ends of the spectrum. Spouse has an iPod, and it is wonderful. Truly superior to other things out there. Not a flash drive, though???

I have a Creative Muvo Nomad, which is cheap cheap cheap! It also acts as a flash drive, which is wonderful. Downside: the battery cover fell off one day while I was walking. Oops. So not the most reliable. Only holds maybe 40 songs. (On the good side, it held my entire dissertation.)

iPod. Must have iPod. I use mine ALL of the time - at work, in the car, in the kitchen, at the computer...

I am not a spender. But sometimes, more expensive IS better.

iPod.

I've resisted the iPod thus far, but now that my sister has one, I suppose I could borrow it.

As I understand it, the Sansa is the best alternative to the iPod. It's made by SanDisk and operates with flash drives of various sizes. Their top of the line Rhapsody, with an 8 GB flash drive that can hold about 2000 songs, is on sale at Best Buy for $190.

An iPod Nano (which my sister has) only costs you about $150, but doesn't have a flash drive and can store only 500 songs.

I have the iPod shuffles, both the long skinny white one, and the new postage-stamp sized one.

I know you said you don't want a shuffle, that you want to be able to see the songs so you can choose, but I will say that the iPods, in whatever form you get them, are great. If you're looking for both quality AND cheap, you can get an iPod shuffle new for $79. Or, you can go to the Apple store online, and get a factory reconditioned one for about $45. My old shuffle is a reconditioned one, and I've never had a second's trouble out of it. I don't spend a lot of time listening to mine, so I don't need all the bells and whistles, but I would recommend that you look at the online store, and see what's out there.

You could also get a generation-old iPod on Craigslist or similar. That's how Spouse picked up his. (It may take persistence.)

I also resisted the iPod but husband got me one for Christmas and I love it!

I have no need for one that holds 7,500 songs but my husband is a techy geek. If I was buying it myself, I would get a nano.
